Storyboard

Finally uploading the storyboard, me and my group created this before our filming schedule as we needed this to go out and film. It made everything run easier as we knew what we wanted to film for that day, in addition to our filming schedule which showed us shot by shot of what and where we needed to film that scence.

More Footage Feedback..

Reaction to other filming:
The reaction we had to our second round of filming was much more positive this time as the couple we wanted to be in our video were amazing actors. It was an advantage to my group as they are an actual couple in real life therefore were able to transfer their emotions for us to capture on camera, which looked really natural and effective. We also changed our actress for the performance based part of our music video to me, as my group felt that i matched the persona of the singer well.

My group decided we would film the 'love birds' scene in our local park - Highlands, which was convenient for everyone as it was local and we didn't have to travel far for filming, but also if there were any scenes we would need to re-film after we had left, we could always come back with our couple to do so without any hassle. This park is very quite and isolated, so it was easy to film without there being any disruptions or people in the background to ruin the shots we wanted to capture. The atmosphere in which our filming for this scene was set was ideally autumnal - lots of leaves, the sun and a lot of nature, as this reflects passion and romance which refers back to the couple. The contrast of warm colours additionally reflected the happiness of the couple's relationship in the past, but also matched the soft melodies of the song.

We also had various locations in which we had the performance based scenes, me lip syncing for that day - a room with a white background, which i thought was very effective as it contrasted me singing against it which would be more exciting for the audience. Unfortunately, the shots we filmed turned out too dark, we needed more natural light to fill out the room. We also used an electric fan behind the camera to make it look like my hair was being blown in the wind, but the fan was blowing too much, which we didn't realize until we had uploaded our footage onto final cut express.  To solve this, we might either edit the shot, or depending on my group's schedule re-film these scenes again ensuring that there's enough light in the room. We had an alternation of filming locations outside and inside, including bedrooms, gardens/parks and pathways which ended up looking visually appealing for our audience as there wasn't too much of one location. We also tried to include lots of shots in our footage such as high angle, low angle, movement shots. We were able to capture many distances and alternating angles as we experimented during filming by filming inside a car, which allowed us to test out any unusual shot ideas we had.

Footage.

Once we uploaded our footage, we decided to cut out the original scene with the actress Zainab Ruby Jaye as we felt that she couldn't engage in the role properly and didn't match the criteria for what we wanted the filming to be like. One of the members within our group stepped in to fill the role and surprised us all as she fitted the role perfectly. She was able to engage in the role with confidence which was exactly what we were looking for. She also lip-synced the song perfectly which fitted the footage we had filmed accurately.

The first scene filmed was outside a house in Brighton, in which Lizzi the new actress lip synced the beginning part of the song whilst acting out a distressed, clearly heart-broken woman. There were a few problems as the weather was dull, but decided to adapt the rest of the filming to this misc-en-scene as it portrayed her mixed feelings. There was also the problem of the actress laughing a lot as she felt weird being filmed lip-singing, so recorded the song on her phone and told her to play this whilst she sung along to it, and then during editing we would just cut the sound out and play our song over this, as this would look more realistic anyway. After a few more re-takes, she finally properly engaged within the role in the next scene filmed on the roadside. The long shots that were filmed were so much better as she decided that she would walk towards the camera whilst singing the song which looked good as the timing to the song was great. The next scene filmed, was with the actress getting agitated at her partner being lazy as during research and planning, a lot of the music videos we saw which fit into the same genre as our song, had the couples arguing over home issues.

In one of the scenes we didn't use a tripod for filming which when watching our footage back, noticed it made it look shaky and uneven. This would have to be sorted properly when in the editing process as we need it to look as professional as possible and for continuity purposes.
In many shots,  we were able to catch mid-shots and long shots of the actress in action, miming along to the song which looks really good, and works in perfect timing with out music. The costume that our actress Lizzi wore was simple and lady like for a young-adult in the 21st century which fitted into what i wanted our target audience to perceive from the overall video. In the end, my group made a decision to not cast Lizzi in the final music video as there wasn't enough footage filmed in Brighton to be used. We decided that i would take her place as we would be able to film more footage  and improve  the shots filmed, following the same concept.

The filming process

During the last week of October, me and my group members  took to the streets of Camden Town to begin filming for our performance based shots in Camden Town. We started by the lock as this is busiest at midday, and thought that the actual Camden Lock could represent our main video girl moving onto better things. We mainly focused on the surroundings of Camden and the people and its inhabitants as our audience will be familiar with the location, and we wanted aspects of the video to look like Amy Winehouse's video - Tears Dry On Their Own.

During filming, we split the role of the director and took it in turns to film the main actress as we wanted to capture a variety of shots in different styles. The part i played was filming the actress when we were on the train towards Camden, in which i was able to get some interesting close up and mid shots of the actress miming along to the song. I wanted the actress to engage with the role properly and to reflect the mixture of feelings that were meant to be shown. I was able to capture some good footage in which the actress is sitting on the train, looking lonely and depressed. The lighting in the background was perfect as it was filmed in the early afternoon, and wasn't too over powering and looked natural and soft, so you could still see the actress' face and capture her emotion. Thinking logically, i filmed in one of the emptiest carriages so that there would be no disruption from the public thinking they would be filmed, or someone accidentally being in the video so that when it came to editing it wouldn't be as challenging or ruin any of the lovely shots captured.

There are also going to be cuts to the narrative aspect of the video, which will show the couple fighting and the wife leaving with the child and then cuts of visual metaphors such as the smashing glass and the baby items. We were thinking of filming this in one of our dining rooms to make it more realistic, whilst having cuts to the husband cheating in a bar to create a better impact.

This was just the beginning of  our filming though as we still had to film the scenes of the husband cheating, aswell as capturing the fight scenes and filming the visual metaphors, as
the video will use three concepts of music videos, visual metaphors, performance and narrative.

Camden Lock
Originally, we asked our friend to be the main actress in this video as she's been in music videos on television before therefore would find it easy to relate to the role without holding herself back.Unfortunately hours before we were due to film, she cancelled on us due to her going on an unexpected holiday which was quite demotivating. Luckily, another friend of ours stepped in to say she was available to film that day.
The next main actress in the video is a good friend of mine - Zainab Ruby Jaye.
We thought it would be appropriate to use her for our music video as she does drama a-level so can engage within the role properly and can adapt herself to fit with what we needed her to do.

Our actress had low self esteem when doing filming in busy public places such as on the train, and near Camden lock, compared with if we had the original actress we were meant to use as she has previous experience of working within the music video industry would have helped. We also had to teach her the lyrics of the song briefly enough for her to be able to lip sync along whilst on the train to Camden as we didn't have time to give her enough notice for her to thoroughly learn the song.

Location, Location, Location & Iconography.

Slug & Lettuce - Muswell Hill was our initial location to film our first scene for our music video, but because we didn't have a license to film, they wouldn't give us legal permission. We were planning to use one of the booths in the bar on a weekend to film the husband cheating with his mistress, as the atmosphere is frequently quite lively and bubbly, so would have fitted the description of what we were looking for. The lighting in the bar also would have fitted in with our filming perfectly and complimented the whole idea of the husband's infidelity being kept a secret from his partner as we didn't want to show the mistress's face, so could have incorporated the lighting to hide this.

Visual Metaphor's -
We decided to include shots of smashing glass and mirrors to represent the cracking and fragility of the relationship. During the planning process, whilst watching other music videos which had relationships and cheating included in it, i noticed that in many of the arguments one of the partners would break something which i thought had a really harsh impact overall and helped me to empathize with what the actor/actress was feeling. It represents the person's emotions spiraling out of control which i thought would be a good idea to include within our music video.

I also watched many videos which had close-ups of butterflies in them, which we wanted to include in our music video as they represented the freedom of the actor/actress. We thought that this would be a good idea to match our song as the lyrics in our song talked about leaving and moving onto better things.
We thought of including the close up shot of a Butterfly to represent the fragility of the relationship, but realised it would be too difficult to catch a close-up like this to include in the video.

In another scene, there are going to be suggestions of a baby boy to match the lyrics 'me and my boy we're leaving'. But to make it more realistic, instead of having an actual baby in the video, we're just going to insinuate that there is a baby by including baby toys, clothes etc.

Stereotype Representation in Music Videos.

A stereotype is something that society associates with a group, or perceives through an image they have.
It's often a generalization used to describe a group of people. Most times they are negatively driven, but may also have positive connotations.

In the video 'If I Were A Boy', Beyonce contradicts stereotypes by reversing the role of the dominating character in the video, as it's usually the male figure who takes on the 'macho' role.
She plays the role of a police woman, who tends to neglect her partner on a regular basis, whilst her partner plays the more feminine role of the stay-at-home wife.

Quest to find unsigned artists

Our original idea was to work with the band '' as a friend of mine worked with them, so i contacted them over facebook and they agreed to let us use their music. I later found out that none of their music had been recorded as they perform all of their songs live, which was a major setback as our music video is going to be narrative, therefore needs to be recorded beforehand as not to complicate things, so that we have enough time to concentrate on the actual music video efficiently.

We then contacted a singer which we found online named 'Emerald Jones' who had a range of cover songs, as well as songs which she had written and recorded herself. We had heard about her online through friends who were dedicated to her music page. After listening to a few of these, we were certain that we wanted to use her song 'Leaving' to film our music video as we liked her sound and thought we had some interesting ideas to brainstorm to see what we could come up with.

What genres of music would you be most excited to work with?

What genres of music would you be most excited to work with?

I am looking forward to working within the RnB genre as this is the type of music that i mainly listen to and watch music videos, so i feel that i would be able to visualize scenes and shots for my music video properly, instead of working with a genre that I'm not familiar with which i wouldn't engage with efficiently enough to produce a good piece of work.

Along the way of looking for unsigned RnB artists, I came across 'Emerald Jones' on Facebook, who really reminded me of the singer 'Toni Braxton'. I listened to some of her own written work which had a soothing, strong feel to her voice, which was incorporated into her music. I really like her sound so have decided to choose one of the songs which she wrote called 'Leaving'.

The concept of the video 'Unbreak My Heart' matches some of the lyrics of the song i have chosen to use from Emerald's play list, so some of the ideas in this video can be incorporated into my own music video when beginning to film.

Toni Braxton - Unbreak My Heart

Inspirational Music Videos.

What music video(s) are most memorable for you or are you inspired by?

Destiny’s child – Emotion

This video is different to normal videos that are usually aired as it’s split into dual narratives so tells 3 different stories at the same time, which presents 3 different women who come across as emotional, yet strong females. but then joins together at the end to complete the ending to the video. I like this idea for the making of music video, as it’s a unique way of telling the story.

Lil Wayne – How to Love

This video was memorable for me as the lyrics of the song have a close match to what is being shown in the video. It goes through the story like a normal music video but towards the end has a break which is a short movie clip, rewinds to show what her life could have been like and then goes back to the normal conventions of a music video. I liked this idea as it was an unusual concept for a music video.

Kate Nash – Foundations

This video is one of my favorites as the story has been told from her point of view, which really helps the audience to engage with what's happening. Animations have also been used throughout this video adding light-hearted elements which help to distract the audience from the reality of the lyrics she's singing which when listened to properly, are quite depressing.

Mood Board.

The mood board which I created using PowerPoint was made using images which I found represented the lyrics of the song 'Leaving'. It also includes clues and gestures of what could be included in the music video.

The image in which the couple are holding hands represents the relationship in which the actress looks back on, reminding her of the positive times she shared with her partner before things turned bad. I thought of including a small montage of the partner and my actress at some point in the video, to give our audience an insight to what her life used to be like compared to what it is now as this relates to the song and why she's leaving.
The image of the crying baby is a reflection of the gestures I'm going to include within the video as the lyrics say 'me and my boy we're leaving', so thought this would be an appropriate representation as i was thinking of casting a baby in the video, or having baby related items to show that there is a child involved.
The image of the crying eye is meant to reflect the persona of the main actress and what she is feeling throughout the video and the type of character she is supposed to be portraying. As she is meant to be going through and emotional break-up, i thought it was important to

Leaving – Emerald Jones

I don’t wanna be the one
to have to cut these ties, every other way I have tried,
I don’t wanna be the one, to have to walk away, but its now or its too late
its too late, its too late, too many mistakes.

I don’t wanna be the one,
To have to tell our child, that’s daddy’s gone away for a while
and I don’t wanna be the one, to wipe tears from his face,
knowing that you’re the real disgrace,
a disgrace, a disgrace, too many mistakes.

Research & Planning.

Goodwin's music video Analysis

1.) Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in rock video, dance routine for boy/girl pop band)

I think this supports Goodwin's theory as Nsync was a popular boy band in their time era, therefore could gain and retain the attention of their target audience. You can see that this video was filmed in the 90s era by the way their dressed and styled. Their all wearing tight tops, jeans and bomber jackets which coordinate to represent that their in a boy band. The structured routines in this video also follow Goodwin's theory of the dance routines.

2.) There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)

This video 'Cheers' is mostly made up of performance-based footage from different clips of Rihanna's tour, which have been combined to show her generally having a good time, partying with fellow celebrities and seeing her fans. The lyrics in the song 'Don't let the bastards get you down, turn it around with another round' reflects her free spirit persona which is shown throughout the video. She is clearly promoting positive vibes in this music video and sending the overall message not to take life too seriously.

3.) There is a relationship between music and visuals

This video 'Stacy's Mom' is a narrative based video. The story behind the video is the main boy in the video, falling for his girlfriend's mom, although she thinks it's her that he likes. The video includes fast paced shots which co-ordinate with the music which gives an upbeat feel to the video. There are also some scenes with animations which make the video more comic to watch. The music in the video also takes the audience through the story as the lyrics tend to match the clip being shown.

4.) There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc.) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body

In the video 'Video phone' by Beyonce and Lady Gaga, they are represented as very fierce, sexy women. Many of the shots throughout this video are focused on them dancing sexually, or making sexual gestures, with the camera zooming in on their bodies to ensure the audience focuses on this.

5.) The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style)

Lady Gaga is famously known for outdoing the norm and going against what society perceives as normal. Along with her dressing style, her videos follow in the footsteps of being unique and making her audience think outside of the box. They usually follow a narrative story or have a message behind the video which she reveals at the end of each video. She also usually includes a crazy dance routine in her videos which reflects her wacky personality.

6.) There is often intertextual refrence (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc.)

Intertextual reference means that artists include in their lyrics about other celebrities, films or songs that are well known in that era. This music video 'Stupid Girls' by Pink, is one of her most memorable videos as the whole video is clearly about her views and opinions on the new generation of music. The video reflects the lyrics in which it portrays female celebrities of today in a negative light and as bad role models, whilst sending the message to young female teenagers to be themselves and not fall into the pressure of wanting to be what society perceives as 'perfect'.

Auteur Theory

A view of film making in which the director is considered the primary creative force in a motion picture

It can perhaps be best explained by US film critic and leading proponent of the theory, Andrew Sarris:
'The strong director imposes his own personality on a film; the weak director allows the personalities of others to run rampant.'

To be considered an auteur, a film-maker must have a body of work which can be analysed for ongoing themes and considerations, whether they occur intentionally or unintentionally. One example would be the theme of the distant father in Steven Spielberg's work. In addition to this, an auteur must have a differentiating style, almost instantly recognisable.

One example of a director that could be considered an auteur, Tim Burton's films have a very distinct style, and he often deals with similar themes in his work. In general, the lead character is separated from the norm of society in some way - a misfit. In the character of Edward Scissorhands, this idea is taken to the very extreme: the main character cannot even touch another person. Other examples of this character type include Batman, Beetlejuice, and to a certain extent, Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Burton's movies also have a distinct style, generally sporting a very Gothic feel. In addition, Burton is known for using stop-motion animation in his films, the prime examples being The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. He is also known for reusing actors and actresses, in particular Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Evaluation of Film Opening.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (I.e. of film openings)

- The title of our film is ‘Trapped’ as we thought it suited the meaning of our film opening well. We chose various locations to film our opening in, such as; the bedroom - the first scene in which one of the main characters is drinking and absorbing drugs.), the dining room which is meant to be seen as a café, the bathroom in which she reflects on herself in the mirror after being beaten up which is meant to be her main turning point in life.

- For the second main character, we decided to film the scene in her front room, as this is where most of the pictures were, which reflect her boring lifestyle of being trapped as a housewife.
- The costume we chose for the first character was of a more sexual Proxy-Connection: keep-alive
Cache-Control: max-age=0

ture to represent her role as a prostitute; the colour red is usually associated with lust and has a sensual nature to it, which is why we chose to have her dressed in a red leotard throughout, until the last scene in which she meets the housewife and changes her lifestyle.
- For the second main character, we decided to have her dressed in a simple checked blue shirt, and all black as black is usually associated with depression that we thought suited her role perfectly.

The font style, which we chose, was called ‘typewriter’ which we downloaded from an online site, and then imported it onto ‘final cut express’. We thought this best suited our film as the two main characters meet on an online chat room, so the typewriter font was linked to this throughout the opening.

The main story of our film is that two completely different woman are drawn together through an online chat room as they are both trapped within their own lifestyles. The opening of our film begins with the prostitute’s eyes being zoomed out of, and into the first scene in which she’s taking drugs and drinking alcohol, which we thought would have a good impact on our audience as they would then want to watch more to find out what happens to her destructive lifestyle, especially as our film is a drama which this reflects.

Our characters are introduced one after the other, which we separated using special effects such as transitions (fade in and out, black out), slow motion and fast motion, and blurs. Our film opens in the beginning with the first main character’s montage. The scenes within her montage include the special effects which are named above. These were included to make an impact on our audience and allow them to engage in what they were watching properly. Similar to the first main character, the second main character had special effects included in her montage, but these were more subtle as she was meant to be living a dull life therefore we thought this would be presented through dull transitions such as slow motions and simple fade outs.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Julia Roberts as a prostitute in ‘Pretty Woman’.

Molly Pavett in 'Trapped'

- They are both dressed in revealing attire which represents the kind of lifestyle their living
- They both have short hair which makes them look more mature
- Molly Pavett's make-up is more natural whereas you can clearly see Julia Roberts' make-up as she’s wearing bright red lipstick and heavy eye makeup.
- Julia Roberts doesn’t have many props apart from her bag, whereas in our film Molly has props such as the bottle of alcohol and the drugs on her bed.
- Molly’s facial expression is harsher as she’s pulling an expression at the bottle in her hand, in comparison to Julia Roberts’ which is caught off guard as she’s in the middle of a conversation.
- Julia is sitting on a bench with her body slightly tilted towards her companion which suggests that she may be involved with this character.
On the other hand, Molly’s is slouched onto the edge of her bed, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand which is where we get the sense of disgust that she is portraying from.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A production company is either a small or large company responsible for the production of a particular genre of film that is usually responsible for raising the funding for that production. I thought that ‘Origin Pictures’ was a good company to choose to distribute our film as they are independent and well known for distributing drama films, which matches the genre of our film. Producer and financier Anant Singh also backs the company through Distant Horizon, the international production and Distribution Company. They have produced material such as ‘The Awakening’ and ‘The First Grader’ which have both been popular films.

'the awakening'

'the first grader'

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Amy Leigh

Gender: Female
Age: 17
Hobbies: Going out with friends, drinking, reading online magazines, Face booking.
Where do they shop: She prefers to shop in New Look or Dorothy Perkins as they offer a more diverse range of clothes to suit her style compared to Topshop/River island.
Music preference: RnB, Dubstep, Drum and Base
TV/Film Taste: Drama, Thriller, Horror.
Aspirations for the future: To be a Hair Stylist because she gets to express her inner creativity.

How did you attract/address your audience?

We tried to use iconography that would appeal to our target audiences such as alcohol and drugs, which would gain and obtain the attention of the teenage audiences. For example, we chose to include drugs and alcohol in the beginning of our film opening as we wanted this to appeal to our target audience. We wanted to make the beginning of our opening interesting and to build suspense to keep the attention of our audience, as we know that younger people would want to watch our film more if there were elements they could relate to.

In a focus group, I asked members of my target demographic what they thought of my film opening and whether they felt it addressed their needs as young audience members, some of the most important responses are as follows:

"I feel the use of 'dangerous' and perhaps 'taboo' props may entice people like me to the film and give them a sense of power. But I don't think these items reflect everyone's lifestyles"

"The costumes are rather stereotypical but I suppose this helps the audience immediately establish the contrast in characters"

"When the prostitute character is looking in the mirror and the music stops I feel the mood really represents that idea of self-realization many youngsters go through- hopefully not about prostitution though"

"The use of lipstick on the prostitute if both really fashionable now and really symbolic of the danger and passion in her lifestyle- an interesting mix."

These comments are pleasing and shows how closely an audience may analyse intricate choices filmmakers make. However, the audience also pointed out the flaws in our product, e.g.

"I can see you in the mirror of one shot- it detracts from the plot"

"Some of the shots should have been reshot to get maximum effect" I particularly agree with this point as we could only edit with the footage we had available. I would be more organised next time.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the filming process, using the equipment was not as challenging as we thought as most of the group had used camera's and tripods before, therefore we were familiar with what we had to do to ensure we got the shots that we wanted to include within our films.
Using final cut express helped me to develop my editing skills as during the editing process of our film, we had to use a variety of tools such as; trim, cut, fade, zooms and transitions.
We came across many problems using this programme, especially timing of our clips not matching the music we wanted to add into our film opening.
We also had to create our own soundtrack to accompany our film which we created using garage-band. This involved adding pieces of instrumentals together, and then composing our piece, ensuring that everything sounded smooth once played all together.

Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Looking back on our preliminary task 'Life On Mars', we have come quite far in terms of learning about different terminology, various shot types and using different equipment to complete the filming of our opening as the production of our film opening involved greater thought and detail to each stage, such as planning, filming, editing and then going on to evaluate all the work we completed.

In our preliminary task, everything we learnt was given to us in lessons which meant that it was easier to complete any task given, as we were able to ask for help if we needed it. we had to complete the task of watching the clip many times, and the writing down precise moments in time ad describing in detail what happened at that moment. This was challenging as it involved a lot of patience, but also had to be accurate as we were then asked to use these shots to create our own version of the clip. We then had to use 'i Movie' to edit our filming and also add in transitions to make our clip look as much like the original clip as we could. Looking back on this stage, using 'iMovie' to edit our filming was much easier as oppose to 'film cut express' which we found difficult to use as we weren't familiar with the programme.

Creating a shot list in preparation for our film, even proved a challenge as we had to write down what location we would film it at, what happens in that shot, the actors needed for that shot and also props needed. It was beneficial for our group in the long run as it helped us to know exactly what we needed to do so there was no time wasted.

During the filming process our group had to be very organised as we all had to plan when to meet to film our openings, which was the hardest part as we were all mostly busy all the time. This made me realize that the production of films aren't easy as there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into the making of the full product.

Half Term Progress

- We were given the task of filming over half-term to complete for when we came back to school, so we could get straight on with filming.
- When we came back, we uploaded our footage straight away so we could get straight onto editing our filming.
- Once our footage had been uploaded, we deleted unnecessary scenes which we thought weren't as appropriate four our film as we had originally planned.
- Then we trimmed scenes to make sure it fitted into the time limit as our film opening has to be no longer than 2minutes. In some scenes, we increased or slowed down the speed to fit our preferences.
- Finally, we added in transitions and effects to make our scenes run smoothly.

Animatronics.

'write up why you created an animatronic'

how did you create it?
- Using Final Cut express, my group were able to create a step by step animation of how we wanted our film to look like. We uploaded hand drawn pictures of our scenes, and then added effects as we went along, with titles which had transitions.

-what did you learn?
In this task, i learnt how to use final cut express as an editing software, add effects onto pictures as well as how to add transitions and use titles meaningfully.

- 'why was this a useful process'
Using final cut express was useful as it is important preparation for editing our film opening. It also helped us structure our opening as seeing it onscreen, we started to realise errors which could be fixed now; such as changing scenes around, instead of in the long-run which would pro-long our final editing procedure.
